Warning: This story contains spoilers for Stranger Things Season 4 Volume 2. One of Vecna’s victims narrowly escaped an even worse fate stranger things 4. Series creators Matt and Ross Dover have revealed an alternate ending for Max Mayfield (Sadi Sink), who escaped from the den of reason in Vena with the help of Kate Bush’s “Running in the Hill (Deal with God)” earlier in season 4. In the penultimate season finale, titled “Chapter Nine: The Piggyback,” Max falls victim to the Vecna curse: Max’s mind is in a coma, an empty black void after Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown)’s fight with Vecna (Jimmy Campbell-Bauer).
“[Max’s death] It was discussed as a possibility. for a while he is “What’s going to happen?” said Ross Dover. Netflix Jekyd. “We wanted to end it with a little more question mark at the end of the season where it’s still really dark and we don’t know if Max is going to be OK… We really don’t know. We wanted to leave him up in the air to move forward into season five.”
Max is one of four Vecna victims whose deaths cause the apocalypse, turning Hawkins into a hellish spectacle conquered by the Upside Down before the fifth and final season of Weird things. Unlike Max, who was clinically dead for a minute before being resurrected by Eleven, Vecna’s other killings are permanently lost: cheerleader Chrissy Cunningham (Grace Van Dien), Hawkins High journalist Fred Benson (Logan Riley Bruner), and Jock Patrick McKinney (Myles Truitt).
“This season, we always wanted to [Star Wars] The Empire strikes back! season,” Matt Dover explained. We’ve tried it out a bit 3but that really doubles down on the idea – at least 3 He has a sad note, there is a sacrifice, but they defeated evil, or at least pushed him back for a while. Whereas with this one, we really wanted them to lose. We wanted our characters to experience what it felt like.”
He continued, “That was the big idea that came out 4, that they will lose and we will give Vecna, and they will lose to him. This will be preparing our characters for what will be the final final showdown with Vecna, with the Upside Down, which will be Season 5.”
